Former F1 driver Stefan Johansson has said that Fernando Alonso, who is known to be undecided about his racing future beyond 2017, should stay with the struggling McLaren-Honda project for one more year. The Swede justified his belief by citing the limited F1 options the Spaniard would have in 2018, as well as the potential for Honda to make big improvements with its engine.

In an interview published on his official website, Johansson said: “It looks difficult for anyone at the top end of the driver market to move much in the current situation. If Alonso were to leave McLaren, where would he go? I doubt neither Mercedes or Ferrari have a seat open for him, Red Bull is already full.
