Lews Hamilton has explained the thumbs up he gave to Lance Stroll as he lapped him. On the start/finish straight, Hamilton was seen giving the Canadian a thumbs up on his way by, confusing many fans.

Originally, it was perceived as a ‘thank you’ for getting out of the way in an easy to pass spot, but Hamilton has confirmed that he was congratulating Stroll on his drive during the race, keeping in mind the tough critics that the 18-year-old has had to deal with.

“I know he’s had such a difficult season,” Hamilton told Sky Sports F1. “He’s been dropped in the deep end, with critics and all those different things you have when you’re 18 and you’re experiencing them for the first time in Formula 1 – in one of the most difficult seasons.
