Fernando Alonso signs contract extension with McLaren F1 team for 2018. Double world champion with slight opportunity than to extend his stay at McLaren into a fourth successive season.

McLaren’s decision to end their unsuccessful partnership with engine provider Honda and switch to Renault power from next season is understood to have been integral in ensuring Alonso would stay with the team.

The Spaniard will contest the 2018 FIA Formula 1 World Championship alongside with Belgium’s Stoffel Vandoorne. The 36-year-old, who has not won a race since the 2013 Chinese Grand Prix and has finished in the points just twice this year, made McLaren sweat over his future.
